Top 6 Oscar Moments Everyone Will Talk About Monday

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (NEWS10) — The 87th Academy Awards offered viewers touching moments and surprising laughs Sunday.

The Winners

Birdman won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and for Cinematography. Eddie Redmayne took home an Oscar for Theory of Everything, and Julianne Moore for her role in Still Alice.

American Sniper, nominated for six awards, won for best Sound Editing.

Patricia Arquette and Wage Equality

Winning the Oscar for actress in a supporting role, Arquette’s acceptance speech set Twitter on fire.

“To every woman who gave birth to every tax payer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.”
Arquette won for her role in Boyhood.

John Legend and Common

After performing their song for the audience, John Legend and Common won best original song for “Glory” for the movie Selma. Both men made moving speeches.

“We wrote this song for a film that was based on events from 50 years ago, but we say that Selma is now because the struggle for justice is right now,” said Legend.

Lady Gaga Sings Stunning Tribute to Julie Andrews

Lady Gaga performed a beautiful tribute to Julie Andrews and the Sound of Music, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Andrews herself appeared at the end of the song and thanked Gaga.

Suicide and the Academy Awards

“Stay weird. Stay different. When it’s your turn and you are standing on this stage, please pass the message to the next person that comes along,” said Graham Moore during his acceptance speech for adapted screenplay, The Imitation Game.

Moore’s speech about his attempted suicide received a standing ovation.
