Spotsylvania: Woman Died of Exposure, Son of Medical Condition

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (AP) – Police say an 84-year-old Spotsylvania County woman died of exposure to cold temperatures after falling down her front-porch stairs, and her son died of an unspecified medical condition as he ran through the snow to a neighbor’s house for help.

Viola Cox and 60-year-old Douglas Cox were found dead outside their home in the Thornburg area last Sunday. Capt. Jeff Pearce of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office says the medical examiner’s office in Richmond determined how the two died.

Local media say that deputies were called to the home about 8:20 a.m. last Sunday while Virginia was experiencing sub-freezing temperatures and gusty winds. Deputies determined that the woman and her son had been outside most of the night. There were no signs of foul play.
