PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) – Trolley buses will be rolling through Petersburg thanks to a federal grant. Sources say Petersburg has been awarded a nearly $610,000 Federal Highway Administration grant for three trolley buses.
One bus will run a downtown route and the other two will stop at historical markers along a route to the Petersburg National Battlefield. The trolleys also will be used for city special events.
Petersburg Area Transit general manager Dironna Belton says the grant will help boost economic development and tourism. She expects the trolleys to begin operating as early as May.
In addition to the FHA grant, a smaller grant from the Federal Transit Administration and local funding will be used for the trolleys.
