This week, The National Transportation Safety Board released new witness videos and photos of the deadly hot air balloon crash that happened on May 9th of last year.
The crash happened in Caroline County and claimed three lives, including two University of Richmond women’s basketball staff members, Ginny Doyle and Natalie Lewis, and the pilot Daniel Kirk.
The exact cause of the accident is not given, but the report goes into detail into possible factors that led to the crash:
“Multiple eyewitnesses reported that the accident balloon approached the intended landing area from the south where another balloon had just landed. As the accident balloon approached the landing site, the pilot engaged the burner; however, the balloon struck powerlines, which resulted in a spark.”
