RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Governor Terry McAuliffe visited workers at a local VDOT facility today to thank them for their hard work throughout Monday’s winter storm.

Crews have been on standby for this week’s winter storm since at 7:00 a.m. Monday.

Trucks were ready to go loaded with plows, spreaders, salt and sand. They load up as often as eight times in one shift. Then lay down tons of salt and sand. Literally. Small trucks can carry five five tons of treatment, larger trucks can hold 10 tons.

VDOT recommends that people avoid driving if they can help it.  If you do go out, make sure you slow down! Stay at least five seconds behind the car in front of you and if you start to slide, don’t slam on the brakes. Take your foot off the gas and steer the car in the direction you want it to go.
