CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — Police are investigating after a 5-year-old was shot Sunday.
Police say that at about 8:50 p.m. on Sunday, a 5-year-old male, who lived at the residence in the 7500 block of Bensley Park Boulevard, was shot by another 5-year-old male while visiting.
The investigation indicated that several adults, including the owner of the handgun, were downstairs while three 5-year-old males, including the victim, were playing upstairs. Police say that the children located the handgun, which was not secured, and began playing with it. As they played with the gun, the victim was shot.
The victim was transported to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
William C. Griffin, 28, the owner of the firearm, was arrested and charged with abuse and neglect of children, a felony. Griffin, of the 1100 block of North 29th Street in Richmond, is being held at the Chesterfield County Jail.
A neighbor, who wishes to remain unidentified, rushed next door when she heard the victim’s mother screaming. She says that Griffin is the boy’s mother’s boyfriend. “I entered. Found the little boy on the floor with his mother’s boyfriend holding pressure. I took over, being a nurse so it would be more effective,” the neighbor said.
The neighbor knows the family well and says that Griffin and the victim are very close.
“They’re not the traditional family, but they chose to be a family. Griffin didn’t have to choose to be a father figure in this little boy’s life. But he loves him,” the neighbor said. Griffin remains in jail while the victim remains in the hospital.
The neighbor says the boy was shot in the abdomen but should recover.
“He didn’t seem afraid. He’s a fearless little kid. Very vivacious, very energetic.”
