ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (AP) – International Paper says Isle of Wight County overcharged it for taxes on machinery and tools at its mill.
The company is suing the county over the tax assessment. The lawsuit says the tax is based on the equipment’s original cost, and not its current value.
The lawsuit also says a supplemental county tax double-taxed certain items.
According to the lawsuit, International Paper overpaid $2.7 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014.
International Paper spokeswoman Jenny Railey tells local media that the company has worked with the county for the past three years to address its tax concern without a resolution.
County spokesman Don Robertson told the newspaper he can’t comment on pending litigation.
International Paper filed the lawsuit last month in Isle of Wight Circuit Court.
