Veronica Dance is an 8th-grader at Holman Middle School in Henrico. She plays basketball on her school’s team, but at Monday night’s VCU game, she dazzled on the court like a pro.
She set out to complete an almost impossible shootout: sink four shots in just 35 seconds. She made the layup with no problem. And she hit the free throw on her very first try. But the three pointer just didn’t want to drop.
“When I kept missing the threes, I was like alright this is the end,” Veronica says. But she didn’t give up…and the three pointer sunk in.
” I was like alright, now this is the end because I knew I wasn’t going to make the half court shot,” Veronica says.
But she did make it, to the delight of the crowd and her family.
“Just disbelief,” Veronica’s dad Allen said of how he felt at the time. ” I went to catch the ball to throw it back to her because I figured she’d missed a shot and when it went thru the net, i just caught the ball and I just slammed it down. I just didn’t know what to think or do.”
Veronica’s feat captured everyone’s attention: even the VCU coaches and players couldn’t take their eyes off this amazing young basketball star.
While the crowd was fired up because of Veronica’s success, they were also excited because her shots won everyone at the game a free pizza.
