#8SPORTSBLITZ Top 10 Rankings for Week 8
1) Hermitage Panthers (7-0)
Last week: def. #10 Douglas Freeman 42-7
This week: vs. Mills Godwin (4-3)
The why: The Panthers look like a team without weakness at this point in the season. Head Coach Patrick Kane has a team that can score any which way you want. In the second quarter at Freeman, the Panthers scored through the air, on the ground, and on defense…twice. It’s hard to put up 35 points in a 12-minute quarter, but Hermitage did it. Godwin will do well to keep it on the ground Friday night and hope the Herm has an off night.
2) L.C. Bird Skyhawks (6-1)
Last week: def. Huguenot 73-0
This week: vs. Cosby (5-2)
The why: In two games against City of Richmond schools, the Skyhawks have outscored their opponents 155-0. They’re clearly superior to their competition, but even against George Wythe and Huguenot those numbers will make your eyes pop. Head Coach David Bedwell better have his guys ready to go this week, though. Cosby comes to Chester, and the Titans will be out for blood after losing two straight.
3) Manchester Lancers (7-0)
Last week: def. Cosby 26-0
This week: vs. George Wythe (0-6)
The why: The shutout win over rival Cosby was as impressive as we’ve seen this season, but it came at a high cost. Star running back Justin Pendergrass broke his ankle and will likely miss the rest of the season. Head Coach Tom Hall and the Lancers will be fine against the Bulldogs, but playing James River and L.C. Bird a man down to finish out the season will be much tougher.
4) Highland Springs Springers (7-0)
Last week: def. Lee-Davis 34-19
This week: @ #8 Henrico (6-1)
The why: A 15-point win over a district foe is good, but Head Coach Loren Johnson probably has his kids practicing this week as if it was a loss. The Springers face their toughest test of the season Friday against a Henrico team coming off its first loss.
5) Thomas Dale Knights (5-2)
Last week: def. Colonial Heights 42-0
This week: vs. Petersburg (4-4)
The why: Similar to Hermitage, Thomas Dale seems to be getting stronger as the season goes on. Not coincidentally, their schedule has also gotten easier since losing at Cosby and at L.C. Bird in back to back weeks. That ends next week as Head Coach Kevin Tucker and company travel to Dinwiddie for a tasty match-up.
6) Atlee Raiders (6-1)
Last week: def. Glen Allen 45-14
This week: vs. Armstrong (5-2)
The why: Head Coach Roscoe Johnson has his team playing with a lot of confidence since dropping a game at Henrico. Armstrong is going the opposite direction, losing two straight. The Raiders should be in for a tough one against the Wildcats.
7) Dinwiddie Generals (6-1)
Last week: def. Matoaca 28-24
This week: @ Hopewell (4-3)
The why: The generals were challenged for the first time since losing to Monacan in Week 0, and they came out on the winning side. They trailed 17-14 entering the third quarter and have two Dakarai Wilson touchdown runs to thank for the win. While less dominant, Head Coach Billy Mills’s offense is more balanced this year with quarterback Bryce Witt throwing more consistently. Hopewell likes to air it out, too, and this should be a fun match up.
8) Henrico Warriors (6-1)
Last week: lost to Varina 28-27
This week: vs. #4 Highland Springs (7-0)
The why: The fact that the loss to Varina was considered upset means Head Coach Gerald Glasco has already accomplished something in his second season, after last year’s squad finished (3-7). That being said, losses can snowball in the Capital District, and Henrico needs it’s defense to be invincible again this week against the Springers to stop that from happening.
9) Powhatan Indians (6-1)
Last week: def. Orange 56-6
This week: @ Fluvanna (1-6)
The why: Oops. We should have paid attention to the Indians a bit earlier in the season. Senior running back Logan Allen is dominant in Powhatan’s backfield. Their one loss is to Hopewell in a game the Indians lead 20-0 at halftime and ended up losing 27-20. Head Coach Jim Woodson has worked more on the passing attack since that loss and Allen said this week the team has gelled. Look out for Powhatan in the 4A State Playoffs.
10) Monacan Chiefs (5-2)
Last week: def. idle
The why: Both Monacan and Douglas Freeman have only lost to teams ranked in the Top 5 at the time of those games. The Chiefs’ losses are to L.C. Bird and Manchester, and the Rebels’ losses are to Atlee and Hermitage. All four losses were blowouts. The only thing separating the two teams is one quality win; Monacan beat Dinwiddie at Dinwiddie in Week 0. That win looks better and better as the Generals continue to win, and it’s what allows Head Coach Jim Henderson and Monacan to re-enter our Top 10. The toughest game left on the schedule is a Week 10 trip to Cosby.
