The man charged in connection with the disappearance of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham is under arrest. That information came from the Charlottesville Police Department and Chief Timothy Longo during a press conference late Wednesday afternoon.
Jesse Matthew, Jr. Has been charged with one count of abduction with the intent to defile and two counts of reckless driving. During the press conference, Longo explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
Police say that he was not arrested in Virginia and that he will be extradited back to the Commonwealth.
A deputy of the Galveston Sheriff’s Office took Matthew into custody in Galveston, Texas. The department issued the following statement following the arrest announcement.
“The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Deputy has arrested Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. in connection with the Kidnapping of Hannah Graham in Virgina. He was located on the Beach in Gilcrest on the Bolivar Pennisula this afternoon around 3:30PM.
At the request of the Charlottesville Police we are NOT making any release pertaining the the circumstances leading to this arrest. Investigators from Charlottesville, will being heading to Galveston tomorrow.”
“It is a positive close to a chapter in this case,” said the FBI Special Agent in charge related to the case.
The reward to find Graham has now reached $100,000, Longo said during the press conference
“We are committed for the Graham family and the entire community,” said Chief Longo.
Police said that the search for Graham remains ongoing. She has been missing for nearly two weeks. Questions about Matthew and his role in other missing persons cases, including the Alexis Murphy case, began to develop after his was charged.
On Wednesday, Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Anthony Martin said that “there is no credible evidence at this time that suggests any third party was involved in the Randy Taylor case and certainly no evidence at this time exists that Jesse Leroy Matthew, Jr. had anything to do with the disappearance of Alexis Murphy.”
