After handing the Binghamton Mets a 2-1 loss Friday night, the Flying Squirrels broke out the champagne to celebrate winning the Western Division title for the first time in Club History.
Richmond seals up the number one spot in the standings due to a drubbing by the Erie Seawolves over the Akron Rubberducks 14-4 that same night. Akron is now fighting with the Bowie Baysox for second in the division.
The Squirrels will also have home field advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.
“It’s a tremendous feeling to be division champs,” manager Russ Morman said with an ear to ear smile, drenched from head to toe.
“All the hard work started back with spring training through the whole season, very gratifying to finish the season here tonight with a division championship.”
The Flying Squirrels still have three games left against the B-Mets at the Diamond, but for tonight, it was reason enough to enjoy what they’ve accomplished.
