Ft. Lee Official: Female Shooter Died At VCU Hospital

Below is a statement from Fort Lee Military Base officials on the active shooter situation that occurred Monday morning on the base in Petersburg.

FORT LEE, Va. – A Fort Lee Soldier was pronounced dead today at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center after an early morning incident where she allegedly shot herself inside the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command headquarters building here on post.

The incident began at approximately 8:45 a.m. when the Soldier allegedly entered the building, brandished a weapon and then barricaded herself in an office with the weapon. An alert was sounded across post and occupants of the building either took shelter or evacuated as directed. All access gates on post were closed temporarily.

Fort Lee Police responded within two minutes of the incident being reported and quickly established contact with the individual. During the course of negotiation with the Soldier, she reportedly turned the weapon on herself. The wounded Soldier was transported to VCU Medical Center. No other personnel were injured.

An all-clear was issued shortly at approximately 9:50 a.m. All gates were reopened for normal operations except the Lee Avenue Gate, which remains closed along with some nearby streets on post adjacent to the headquarters building as the investigation continues.

In accordance with Department of Defense policy, the identity of the Soldier is being withheld until 24 hours after her next of kin have been notified.

Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command are on scene and investigating the incident.

Fort Lee officials take this incident very seriously and are fully cooperating with the investigation. No further information or details about the incident will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the ongoing criminal investigation.
