The man charged in connection to the death of 8-year-old Marty Cobb has been ordered to undergo a mental evaluation before the case will move forward.

That action came down when Mairese Washington made his appearance in Richmond City Circuit Court Thursday morning.

Washington has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and strangulation for his part in the May 1 death of 8-year-old Cobb and the sexual assault of Cobb’s 12-year-old sister.

The family of the Cobb children said that Marty was killed as he was trying to defend his sister from Washington’s attack.

Washington will return to court on September 9, where the results of the evaluation will be reviewed by a judge.
