3-Year-Old Hopewell Boy Shoots Twin Brother in the Buttocks

Hopewell Police are investigating after a 3-year-old boy allegedly shot his twin brother in the buttocks on Monday.

The boy was shot with a small-caliber weapon on the 200 block of South Eighth Avenue, in the Thomas Rolfe Court housing complex.

Though the initial call claimed the child was shot on a nearby playground, Hopewell Police have confirmed that the child was shot inside a residence. Neighbors say they didn’t hear any gunfire.

The child is in stable condition and was transported to VCU Medical Center in a police cruiser. The victim’s twin suffered a hand injury, though it is unclear whether the injury was caused by a bullet or from handling the gun.

At this time it is unknown who owns the gun, who was supervising the children or how they were able to get a hold of the weapon.

“From the information that were getting from the community, there were no shots fired outside,” says Hopewell Police Chief John Keohane. “The three-year-old up on 4th Street who was just was dropped off at another house and all the information that has come forward is that he was the one who got the unattended weapon and fired the weapon.”

Police say after the boy fired the weapon injuring himself and his brother, their mother’s boyfriend transported the boy to another apartment in his car. Police searched that car and found two handguns, a .25 caliber and a 9mm pistol, which were both loaded.

“A lot more work to do on the mother and also the boyfriend and just to see whose weapon it was that was left unattended,” Keohane says.

Neighbors in this community say the whole thing could have been prevented.

“It said it really is it’s real sad. I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t know the reason for all of it but there should be no reason,” says neighbor Shirley Taylor.

“Secure your weapons unload them and separate the ammunition from the weapon and secure them both,” Keohane says. “Lock them up.”
