City of Richmond Sets Aside Funds to Repair Damaged Alleys

The City of Richmond wants to fix up bad alleys, but some neighbors say it’s too little, too late.

Trey Blakinship can barely get his onto his own driveway, which in the Fan is a prime piece of real estate.

His driveway connects to a city-maintained alley way off of Main Street. That alley way is eroding away, creating a steep drop from the driveway to the road.

“We can’t even get in our own driveway anymore. Cars are having trouble getting in there,” Blakinship said.

He first posted this problem on the city monitored “See Click Fix” website on October 7th, 2012.

It’s been viewed nearly a thousand times with neighbors commenting they’re having similar issues.

Most of them want to see that alley paved but the requests have been largely ignored.

“Just frustrated that I started talking about this a year and a half ago and I’m still taking about it,” Blakinship said.

The city just announced that it’s setting aside $600,000 to fix up more than 1,200 alleys that are in bad condition. Most of the complaints are similar to Blakinship and also include lots of pothole problems. In Blakinship’s case, Public Works say the apron of the driveway is private property they can’t touch, but he says fixing the alley will fix his problem, too.

“I just want them to raise and pave the alley,” Blakinship said.

Right now the city has more than 800 requests for service in alleys with only six maintenance workers assigned.

Public Works hopes their new initiative will help reduce those requests.
