King’s Dominion Brings Back Park Originals to Celebrate 40th Anniversary

DOSWELL, Va – Saturday was opening day at King’s Dominion for the 2014 season. This year is extra special because the park is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary.

Eowyn Ellison is no stranger to the sights and rides at King’s Dominion.

“I’ve been coming semi-regularly since 1975.”

She would come with her mother and siblings when she was a little girl. Now, she and her husband make the drive from Maryland several times a year.

But 2014 is extra special because the park is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

“We have really gone back to our roots for the 40th celebration, and brought back some of the things that people will remember from the 70’s and 80’s. One of those things–the singing mushrooms,” said Katelyn Sherwood, the communications manager at King’s Dominion.

The old floral clock was completely rebuilt, and Candy Apple Grove, one of the park’s original classic midways, has returned.

“I love it. I mean, I think it’s wonderful that the park is here after 40 years. And I love the fact that the owners are doing so much to spruce it up,” said Ellison.

Sherwood says that also includes redoing the fountains. They’ve added new LED lights and jets for the evening water shows.

Spring Bloom Festival is also new this year. That will be going on until May 18.

“We have planted over 15,000 flowers along International Street. All of our buildings have been freshly painted. So when people step out of the gates unto International Street, it’s just really energetic.”

And for many, it’s also a walk down memory lane. Copyright 2014 by Young Broadcasting of Richmond

“It makes me feel good. I’m so happy they’re back. I’ve missed them,” said Ellison.
