The couple’s lawyers filed a motion Tuesday night asking for 11 of the 14 felony charges to be dropped. The documents do not mention two counts of making false statements or Maureen McDonnell’s charge of obstruction.

The McDonnell’s are accused of accepting more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from Jonnie Williams, the CEO of dietary supplements company Star Scientific. According to the indictment, the relationship started back in 2009 when McDonnell was running for governor. Documents detail a nearly $20,000 New York shopping trip with former First Lady McDonnell, $15,000 for catering at McDonnell’s daughter’s wedding and a $50,000 loan for rental properties.

McDonnell has admitted to accepting gifts and apologized for it, but denies doing anything illegal in exchange for them. In the motion his lawyers argue that McDonnell never took any official action to help Star Scientific.

The McDonnell’s have pleaded not guilty. Their trial is set for late July.
