Tractor-Trailer Fire Shuts Down I-95 South in Prince George

UPDATE: One of the lanes has reopened as of 10:20 a.m. There is currently a 3-mile backup.


PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—A tractor-trailer fully loaded with tires caught fire along I-95 South around 7:13 a.m. Thursday. All southbound lanes of the interstate are shut down near the I-295 interchange in Prince George County due to the blaze.

Virginia State Police and the Prince George County Fire Department are currently at the scene near mile marker 46, approximately 1 mile north of Route 301. According to VSP, a preliminary investigation revealed that the fire started as the result of a trailer brake fire. No injuries have been reported.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says drivers in the area can expect significant delays. At this time it is unknown when the interstate will reopen.

A detour has been posted; drivers should take Exit 47 (Rives Road) to Route 301 (South Crater Road) back to I-95 South near mile marker 45.
