Richmond Fire: Change Smoke Alarm Batteries for Daylight Savings

RICHMOND (WRIC)The City of Richmond Department of Fire & Emergency Services is reminding area residents to change their smoke alarm batteries on Sunday, March 9, which marks the beginning of daylight savings time.

The department says that changing smoke alarm batteries a minimum of twice a year, testing those alarms monthly, and reminding others to do the same are among the most effective ways of preventing fire-related deaths and injuries.

Richmond Fire said in a news release on Wednesday, “The most commonly cited cause of non-working smoke alarms continues to be worn out or missing batteries. Additionally, the International Association of Fire Chiefs recommends that smoke alarms in homes and businesses be replaced every 10 years. Having dual sensor smoke alarms with both ionization and photo electric technology is the best way to alert people to all types of home fires.”

Richmond Fire also recommends changing carbon monoxide detector batteries this weekend.

Anyone requiring assistance with their smoke alarm is encouraged to call 804-646-1526. Locals living outside the City of Richmond may call the Metro Richmond Smoke Alarm Hotline at 1-888-537-5967.
