Landmark Theater Becomes New Altria Theater

RICHMOND (WRIC) – The Landmark Theater is getting a new name.

As of Friday, it is the new Altria Theater.

“The theater has a rich history and this is the next chapter in that history and we are excited,” says Jay Smith of the CenterStage Foundation.

Back in 2012, Altria donated $10 million towards a $60 million renovation project – renovations the 87-year old theater desperately needed.

“We're glad to be here today to contribute to our hometown and make the culture here in Richmond more robust,” says Altria spokesperson Jeff Caldwell.

Altria's donations helped refurbished seating inside, bought a brand new stage, and improved the facade outside among several other changes including all new mechanical, HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems.

It's an investment Altria couldn't pass up

“Our headquarters is here,” Caldwell says. “We have more than 4,000 Virginian employees and we are very proud of the fact that we can play a part in this community and really invest in this long term development.”

It's an even bigger investment for the city of Richmond

“It's going to have a $6.1 million impact on the city, so the investment is well placed, plus it makes the culture in the city more viable,” says Mayor Dwight Jones.

Renovations at the theater are still ongoing. Those aren't scheduled to be done until November of this year. But CenterStage officials felt now was the perfect time to say thank you to Altria and unveiling the marquee was the way to do so.
