RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Parts of Virginia are bracing for a storm forecast to bring up to a foot of heavy, wet snow.
A winter storm warning is effective from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday in southwestern and Southside Virginia.
The National Weather Service says 4 to 8 inches of snow is possible west of the Blue Ridge. Areas further east across the Piedmont could receive half a foot to a foot of snow.
Most other areas of Virginia are under a winter storm watch through Thursday afternoon.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, authorizing state agencies to prepare to assist local governments. He urged Virginians to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and be prepared for potential power outages.
