Stores Running Out of Ice Melt Ahead of Storm

RICHMOND (WRIC)—Stockpiles of ice melt have been wiped out across the area. It's tough to find anywhere.

Several hardware stores, auto stores and pharmacies say the product in hot demand is nowhere to be found, thanks to several recent winter storms.

At Pleasant's Hardware, winter weather supplies have been snatched up.

“They are clean out of it,” said Richard Izquierdo. “They gave me a name. I can't remember for a possible substitute so I'm just going to go home and sit it out!”

It's the same story at most hardware stores in the area. Ice melt is all sold out. Stores' suppliers haven't been able to keep up with demand.

“Don't come expecting too much,” said Manager Clay Butler. “I know a lot of our competition is out of the same products that we are. You may want to call ahead and see what we do have.”

After the last snow two weeks ago, Pleasant's Hardware still had pallets left. But now, just a few shovels, some sleds and lots of ice scrapers remain.

But there are some alternatives. The store has been selling sand and cat litter, which can both get the job done.

“Those products obviously don't melt the ice or the snow, but they would help provide traction on steps or if your car gets stuck or something like that,” Butler said.

Pleasant's says even its last few shovels are flying off the shelves.

The big-name stores like Lowe's and Home Depot are also completely out of ice melt.
