Wintry Mix and Snow on Monday?

RICHMOND (WRIC)—Though things are
heating up this weekend as temperatures rocket into the 50s, winter returns in
full force next week. The ABC 8 News StormTracker
weather team
is monitoring a winter weather system that could bring rain, a
wintry mix and snow our way on Monday.

Central Virginia saw another cold
morning on Friday, with temperatures in the teens, but we will see a very quick
warm-up as highs climb into the lower and middle 40s under mostly sunny skies.
Our skies will remain partly cloudy Friday night and it will be chilly, with
lows in the middle 20s.

Saturday will be a decent day, with
partly sunny skies and highs climbing to near 50 degrees. A weather system will
move in later Saturday night, bringing us increasing clouds with a chance of
showers for Sunday, but it will still be mild, with highs in the middle to
upper 50s.

As that weather system moves out on
Monday, we could see a period of wintry mix and snow. What has been looking
like a mixed scenario is looking more like a mix to snow event. The timing
looks like we could start to see some precipitation in the early morning hours
on Monday, but morning rush hour could turn sloppy as the colder air comes in.
The latest models keep the cold air around, possibly allowing snow to stick
around through the early afternoon. Accumulations are looking possible if this
scenario pans out, but just how much and where remains to be seen. The ABC 8
News StormTracker weather team will keep you updated through the weekend, as
additional model runs come out that will allow us to tweak the forecast.

Another weather system will push up
from the South on Tuesday, and this could bring us a brief period of a wintry
mix during the early part of your Tuesday before changing over to all rain.

Rain will continue for Wednesday as
temperatures again push into the middle 50s. That system will move out later
Wednesday night and sunshine will make a return for Thursday, with highs in the
lower 40s.

Clouds will increase on Friday ahead
of a system coming up from the Gulf. This is the much-advertised system on
social media that you have all been asking and reading about. The long-range
models show this system as either steady to heavy rain, or snow to ice to rain,
or all snow. Basically, this is a system that we will continue to watch and see
how the model changes and trends during the next several days.
