CHESTERFIELD (WRIC) – School
was canceled for another day – meaning another day where many parents were
scrambling to find childcare.
Many parents and kids have
found the perfect cure for cabin fever – their neighborhood YMCA.
“Januarys are already
really busy with resolutions and all that good stuff so the extra snow days have
kept us a little bit busier,” says Josh Green, Exec. Director, Swift Creek
All area YMCAs have
reported busier than normal numbers. More than 2,000 kids across Central
Virginia are enrolled in YMCA daycares. That's more than any other daycare
organization – and a number that continues to grow during the snow days.
“We see a lot of new faces
in January anyway. We've brought in extra staff because we've just had more
But even if the kids don't
need daycare, parents like Ted St. Pierre say a trip to the Y is a great way
for the family to kill some time when school is out.
“It's good to get them out
and work some of that stress off,” he says.
Leaders at the Y say their
basketball courts have been booked solid as kids of all ages have needed a
place to practice.
“Basketball's been really
busy right now,” Green says. “There's a lot of leagues in but schools are
closed and they can't get their practice in.”
The Swift Creek Y also
says their membership numbers are growing, so for them, the more snow days, the
