RICHMOND (WRIC)—On Thursday a news conference will be held revealing details of the Richmond Office of the Inspector General's investigation into the troubled Richmond Department of Social Services.
According to a new report by Richmond City Auditor Umesh Dalal, children's safety may have been compromised due to some of the decisions made by the department, saying that 66 percent of a random selection of 100 cases were inappropriately closed. The report alleges that these cases were so closed in order to reduce the number of open cases in the system.
Several sexual abuse referrals were not conducted in conjunction with law enforcement, as is required by Child Protective Services. Other cases were closed without providing the proper services to the families and children concerned.
