Louisa Mother Charged in Baby Son’s Fatal Poisoning

LOUISA, Va. (WRIC)—A Louisa County Sheriff's Office investigation has revealed that a 6-month-old baby believed to have died of sudden infant death syndrome may have actually been poisoned to death by his own mother.

Little Tyler Firth died on March 19, 2013. On that day, EMS personnel and law enforcement responded to the 1500 block of Roundabout Road in Louisa for reports of a baby who wasn't breathing. Despite first responders' attempts to revive him, Firth was pronounced dead on arrival at UVA Hospital.

The original cause of the baby's death was SIDS—until lab results revealed four times the lethal dose of Benadryl and high levels of Tylenol in Firth's body.

Brian Firth, Tyler's dad,
says he'll always remember his son as a happy baby.

“It was hard enough
to deal with the SIDS and to find out it was so much more is

On Nov. 6, Firth's 31-year-old mother, Tristan T. Goodwin, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse and neglect. It took authorities nearly a month to locate her, but she was finally arrested without incident on Dec. 4.

Goodwin will remain at the Central Virginia Regional Jail without bond until she appears in court on Monday.

Brian says he doesn't
believe his longtime girlfriend would purposefully hurt Tyler

“I don't think she
did it on purpose, Firth says. “I think it was just an ignorant move it was
dumb it was a dumb mistake you don't give a 6 month old baby Benadryl.”

“She said she was giving
it to him for he was teething and he had a runny nose.”

All it takes is a look at Brian's
eyes to see the death of his son – and now the arrest of his girlfriend haunts

“I am angry and upset,”
he says. “Like I said, if it makes sense to love someone and hate them at the
same time. I love her, but that was our kid.”
