VCU Holds Tribute to Nelson Mandela

RICHMOND (WRIC) – VCU held a tribute event to celebrate the
life of Nelson Mandela at the university commons.

Faculty members, students and people from the community gathered
inside the Commons theater to honor the former South African president.

The event was sponsored by the Black Education
Association, global education office and the department of African American
studies.

Members of those groups spoke about Mandela's
resistance to racism and his impact on the world.

Tawnya Pettiford-Wates, president of the Black Education Association,
says the event is about celebrating everything Mandela accomplished,
but also remembering the struggles he went through and making sure we continue
to move forward.

The event wrapped up with some music and poetry
reading.
