8News and Puritan Cleaners Extend Coats for Kids Drive

RICHMOND (WRIC) – 8News is taking the lead and again helping Puritan Cleaners collect coats for needy kids.

This year's Coats for Kids drive has been extended through the first week of December, so there's still time to give.

Coats for Kids begins with someone who cares. Then, the experts at Puritan Cleaners take over.

At the production facility at Staples Mill Road, the coats get a general inspection and loaded into giant machines for washing. If needed, the coats are treated with powerful jets of steam.

“Anything that needs spot removal we make sure to get the spots out and brush off any lint that's on the jackets,” says Puritan Cleaners Operations Manager Norman Way.

Puritan does everything to make sure the coats look like new. Seamstresses fix zippers and buttons and make sure things are in order.

“We've got over 16,000 coats this year we'll probably end up with 17,000.”

But 170 Puritan employees are acting as one.

“Every one of them is participating and helping in their own way to get the coats ready.”

Puritan needs your help too. Add your coat to the racks that are tagged and ready for needy area kids this winter. Drop off a gently used coat at any Puritan Cleaners between now and December 7. They'll take care of the rest.

The Coats for Kids will be distributed in December through the Salvation Army's Christmas Center.
