Flying Squirrels Announce ‘Name the Beer’ Contest

RICHMOND (WRIC)—A debate may be brewing in town over where the Richmond Flying Squirrels' new stadium should be, but perhaps fans will unite over the team's new brand of beer.

The Squirrels announced Tuesday morning that the team is partnering with Ashland-based Center of the Universe Brewing Company to create a special new brew. The beer will be distributed by Brown Distributing.

“Although I've never been a big beer drinker, the Squirrels realize how important the craft beer industry is to this region,” said Todd “Parney” Parnell, the Flying Squirrels' Vice President and COO. “In all seriousness though, we recognized this as a wonderful opportunity to join in the beer craze in Richmond. With ideal partners in Center of the Universe and Brown Distributing, we know that this brand will be of the utmost quality and something baseball and beer enthusiasts will enjoy immensely.”

Fans won't just get to enjoy the brew—they also get to name it. The Squirrels announced on Nov. 26 that they will partner with the Richmond Times-Dispatch for a “Name the Beer” contest. Richmonders can choose from Brush Back, Chin Music, Hanging Curve, Knee Buckler and Perfect Game.

Fans may vote online here, or text SQUIRRELSBEER in all capital letters to 44544, through Friday, Dec. 6. The Flying Squirrels and COTU are expected to reveal the official name on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

The beer will be available at The Diamond and other local retailers.

“We really want this brand to embody the creative nature with which we approach the baseball business,” Parnell said. “We think each of the name finalists has potential, and as always, want feedback from our fans to gauge what direction they want our efforts to go.”
