Virginia DMV Reviews Offensive RGIII License Plates

RICHMOND (WRIC)—Controversial Virginia license plates belonging to an apparent Dallas Cowboys fan are under review by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The tags in question read “F RG3″ and are plastered on a navy Jeep Laredo that bears a large Cowboys football helmet magnet. While the message could have any number of meanings, many believe it's an obvious jab at Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Cowboys
fan Tommy Little says this isn't the first time someone has snapped a picture
of his customized license plate.

“I can't
tell you how many people at stop lights will snap a picture,” he says. “I've
been stopped at gas stations. And I'm talking about Redskins and Cowboys fans.”

But once the picture went
viral, there were quite a few people who found it offensive and it apparently
isn't the first time someone complained.

“It turns out the DMV
actually recalled this message back in July,” says DMV spokesperson Sunni Brown.
“It is now on our no issue list.”

Little says he appealed
the recall, but never heard back so he kept the plates.

“It's a letter F. There's
no vulgar word on the plate. It's how you interpret it. Why is that on me?”

He also wants to know that
if it was offensive, why it was approved in the first place.

The DMV says they get 10,000
requests a month that are reviewed and sometimes things fall through the
cracks.

“Do we miss a few? We do,” Brown says. “That's
why we rely on the public to notify us if they see a questionable message out
there on the roadways. We want to know about it so we can take a second look.”

After all the controversy
on Twitter and other sites, Little says he'll give in and put regular plates on
his car.

“I'm probably going to
switch out the plates. I don't think I should have to, but it's a battle I
can't win, especially in Redskins country.”

On the other side of the
issue, the person who tweeted the picture was bombarded with people saying he
was a tattletale and too sensitive.

So in some ways, he was
getting more backlash on Twitter then the actual driver. he has now deleted his Twitter account.
