CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (AP) – Crews have finished a nearly $90 million expansion of Interstate 81 in the Christiansburg area.
The latest reports say that the massive project added one southbound lane along 5 miles of the highway, creating three continuous southbound lanes from Ironto to Christiansburg. It is intended to give slower vehicles two lanes through the mountain pass instead of one.
Widened shoulders also expanded the space available for emergency passing and stops.
An estimated 23,000 travelers use the southbound interstate lanes each weekday.
The company contracted by the Virginia Department of Transportation has until Dec. 30 to finish minor items.
The project involved blasting and had been a major headache for travelers along the section of the interstate.
