Petersburg Reopens Old Skating Rink

PETERSBURG (WRIC) – An old indoor skating rink is about to re-open in Petersburg and this means a lot to the community.

From the outside, it appears to be just a big blue building, but it's actually an old skating rink that's been closed for more than a decade. The new owner is blowing off the dust, making new modifications, and replacing all of the skates.

Sha'reen Fuller took 8news inside the soon to be skate factory. It's still a work in progress, but she says repairs are already underway.

“A lot of them have dry rotted, and of course they been sitting here for about 10 years, so they have to be replaced,” she says. “There was water that I believe got underneath the wood, and it caused it to crack a little bit, so that will be replaced.”

Fuller is a military officer at Fort Lee Army Base who moved to the area six years ago. Her original plan was to build a new skating rink – until she found out this one was just sitting here.

Fuller wants this place to have a positive impact in the area.

“I would very much like to get the kids off the streets, and keep them off the streets.”

When the skating rink does open on December 20, there will also be an open door for community leaders.

“We will have church nights and youth nights and have contact with different PTA leaders and officials in the City.”
