Sex Offenders Ordered to Not Answer Door for Trick-or-Treaters

RICHMOND (WRIC) – This Halloween, sex offenders on probation or under parole supervision are ordered to turn their porch lights off and not answer the door for trick-or-treaters.

State Police and the Department of Corrections will also randomly check homes to make sure high risk offenders are following the rules.

“I think anything that we all can do as a community to help with the safety of our children is a good thing,” says parent Kristi Saunders.

8news decided to do some checking of our own.  We randomly selected a few neighborhoods in the metro Richmond area to see how many convicted sex offenders live nearby.

First we typed in the zip code for the Tuckahoe community in Henrico County and found 24 sex offenders living and working in the area. Several live on or near Three Chopt Road.

We then took at look at the Near West End in Richmond – a very family oriented community – and found 13 registered sex offenders.

Lastly we plugged in the zip code for Midlothian and found 40 sex offenders – more than half of which call this area home.

It's important to point out that a convicted sex offender not on supervision is allowed to participate in Halloween.

Police recommend parent check the Sex Offender Registry and take note of any sex offenders living in their neighborhood.
