Government Shutdown Cancels Major Events at Ft. Lee

FORT LEE, Va. (WRIC)—Several big
events at Fort Lee months in the making have been cancelled due to the government
shutdown
.

Oktoberfest, Fort Lee's Run for the
Fallen and the Army's Best Warrior Competition are now all on the back burner
because Fort Lee simply doesn't have the funds or resources to make them
happen.

The first event, Oktoberfest, is
supposed to happen on Saturday, but it has been altogether cancelled.

The next major event that won't be held
as scheduled holds special meaning for many—the Run for the Fallen, an annual
tradition to honor those service members who gave their lives.

Danielle Ozbat lost her husband,
Captain Jesse Ozbat, just over a year ago while he was serving in Afghanistan.
She says the Run for the Fallen helped her cope with losing him.

“I walked two miles and some of
my family members walked five in honor of my husband,” Ozbat said.
“Just seeing that people care and that they support us, it means a lot.”

The run is supposed to happen on Oct.19,
but now those registered to honor these fallen servicemen have to wait until a
new date is set.

Lastly, because of the shutdown,
competitors in the Army's Best Warrior Competition, who have trained and
qualified and were supposed to be flying into Fort Lee Sunday from around the
world, won't be making the trip.

“This is a major service-wide
event that brings soldiers who have competed at major army commands across the
globe to Fort Lee,” says Ft. Lee spokesperson Stephen Baker. “That's
something that we just want to do right, and if we don't have the resources to
do it right, we're gonna wait until we can. We don't know how long that will
be.”

The Run for the Fallen will be
rescheduled for a date sometime in the spring.

The Best Warrior Competition will
happen eventually, but no date has been set.
