RICHMOND – Equality Virginia, the statewide advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Virginians, is creating the state's first custom license plate supporting LGBT equality.
Equality Virginia says the new plate provides a visible way for Virginians to show their support for equal rights for all on the road.
The Department of Motor Vehicles requires prepayment from 450 applicants, a legislative sponsor and approval from the General Assembly. Once the governor signs off on the license plates bill, plates can go into production.
The plates will cost between $25 for non-personalized and $35 for personalized. After 1,000 sales, $15 from every plate will benefit Equality Virginia's efforts to improve the lives of LGBT Virginians.
Those who want a custom plate can pre-register at equalityvirginia.org. The organization has reached half its pre-registration goal and once the goal is met, payment will be collected to submit to the DMV.
