8News Investigates: School Bus Stop Near Sex Offender

of Buck Rub Drive and Buck Rub Place is a bus stop for elementary and middle
school students in Chesterfield – but just across the street lives a registered
sex offender.

It has some parents on edge.

“It concerns me,”
says one parent. “I would hope that we can get the bus stop moved so I can feel
safe and comfortable for my kids.”

Parents 8News spoke to in
the Deer Run neighborhood asked us not to reveal their identity but tells us
they want – the stop where more than a dozen young and pre-teen kids linger
every morning waiting on the school bus to be moved.

According to the Virginia
State Police registry the sex offender was convicted last year of taking
indecent liberties with children.

Neighbors say he keeps to
himself but several parents tell us they won't let her kids walk to and from
the bus stop alone.

8News took the parents'
concerns to Chesterfield schools, who were quick to react.

“We went ahead and
had the discussion about the location of the stop understanding there was a
registered sex offender with the Virginia State Police and quickly made the
decision we wanted to move that stop,” says Chesterfield County Schools
Spokesperson Shawn Smith.

Starting Friday, the new
stop will be about a tenth of a mile down the street at the intersection of Affirmed
and Buck Rub Drives.

Students should be coming
home with a note about new stop.

Smith says they can't
always make a change that quickly because they have thousands of bus stops to
consider but always encourage parents to reach out to them.

Now the new stop maybe a
little further down the road for some kids. But parents say the distance is
worth the peace of mind.

“I don't have a
problem going in my car and going to the bus stop and just for them to be safe I
will take that extra five minutes to get them to the bus stop,” says one

Meanwhile 8News did some
digging and found there are no laws prohibiting registered sex offenders from
living near a school bus stop.
