Petersburg Parents To Weigh In On Year-Round Schools

PETERSBURG, VA— Petersburg parents will get to weigh in on a plan to move two city schools to a year-round schedule Wednesday night.

If approved, A.P. Hill Elementary School and Peabody Middle School would move to a year-round curriculum starting next year.

When the proposal was introduced, Petersburg City Schools Superintendent Dr. Joseph Melvin cited a 2011 study that shows a year-round curriculum improved grades, especially among African American students.

School leaders say the new calendar would call for students to be in school the same amount of time, 180 days. Student's vacation, however, would be spread throughout the year, rather than the traditional summer hiatus.

The community forum tonight will be held at A.P. Hill Elementary School at 6 p.m. The school is located at 1450 Talley Avenue.
