Fundraiser Set For Family Of Boy Killed By Falling Tree

RICHMOND, VA—A fundraiser for the family of the young boy killed by a falling tree inside Maymont Park during a June storm will be held Sunday.

Shawn Wills, 4, was killed when a large tree was toppled by winds ahead of a line of severe storms on June 13. The incident happened just as the park was being evacuated.

A “Cut-a-thon for Shawn” will be held Sunday at Salon Magnolia Spa. Organizers say 100% of the proceeds from the event will go directly to the Shawn Wills Memorial Fund.

Donations can be made to the Shawn Wills memorial fund at any Wells Fargo branch or online here.

The event runs from 1-5 p.m. The salon is located at 2208 John Rolfe Parkway in Richmond.

The day of the incident, Richmond City Mayor Dwight Jones visited the park to speak with the family as they mourned the loss of their loved one.

“It's a tragic situation, and you can't be everywhere at all times, but when the opportunity avails itself to be in a situation like this, I think it's a good thing to do,” Richmond City Mayor Dwight Jones said of the tragedy.

“We're asking the entire city to pray with this family,” Mayor Jones said.
