The Henrico County Board of Supervisors approved construction of a new cell tower in the West End, but not everyone is excited about it.
A new N-Telos tower will be built near Pemberton Elementary School and Byrd Middle School after the board voted in favor of the project Tuesday night.
Some residents have health concerns about the tower, saying they are worried it will emit radiation.
“We are seeing greater numbers of cell phone towers, more people using them, the research is evolving,” said resident Margee Krebs. “So, I think to say it is alright right now, it may be, but I don't think we have the adequate information to make that decision.”
Research from groups including the American Cancer Society says the towers are not a health risk. County leaders are instead focusing on the benefits for residents.
“There are a large number of cell phone users and data users as you are aware, that's the trend of the time, it's the utility pole I guess of this generation when you think about it,” said Henrico's director of planning Joe Emerson. “There have been other locations considered, this location fit best.”
