HOEPWELL, VA—City leaders in Hopewell are telling residents to clean up their trash or pay a big fine.
“It seems like we don't enforce some of the rules, and there are some who don't follow them,” said Wayne Walton, Hopewell City Councilor.
Inoperable vehicles without a license plate are code violation and boats parked on the street are a code violation.
Walton said he and other city council members are considering increasing the fines for people who are breaking code violations—the move comes after the council received a number of complaints.
“I think it's about time they crack down on it,” said Hopewell resident Fred Meadows. “It's obvious some people don't have a responsibility or see their responsibility of cleaning up; it's the benefit of everybody if they do it.”
City leaders had a work session this week, and are still in the early stages of deciding what methods to take to get the trash cleaned up.
