CHESTERFIELD, VA—Students and alumni in Chesterfield County are rallying to keep their band teacher after budget cuts could transfer the teacher to another school.
Cody Tomnay, a junior and baritone player for the Thomas Dale High School band, says he was shocked when his band director, David Holley, told the band he was being transferred because of budget cuts, but didn't know where.
“He's been there for eight years, and he's bonded with his students and he doesn't want to leave anymore than we want him to leave,” said band member Cody Tomnay.
Students at the school have started an online petition in hopes Holley won't be transferred. The petition already has more than 1,000 signatures.
“He's not just a band teacher to us, he's a mentor—we look up to him,” said Tomnay.
Tomnay says he just wanted everyone to benefit, as he has, from learning from his band director.
“I want everybody to have the same education that I got and without these teachers that won't happen,” said Tomnay.
The Chesterfield County Public Schools System says it doesn't comment on personnel matters, but does reiterate that no one is being fired, just transferred.
