Periodical Cicadas Coming To Virginia

RICHMOND, VA—Starting in April, you may notice a strange sound across Virginia; it's a noise can be summed up in one word—cicadas.

Virginia is expected to be bombarded with the insects, come mid-April. Specifically, the area is expected to see periodical cicadas, which are different from the ones you see every year.

Periodical cicadas have red eyes, black bodies and golden wings. The bugs are coming out after 17 years of hiding.

“For the last 17 years, they've been down in the soil– as nymphs, sucking on sap through the roots,” explains entomologist Dr. Art Evans.

For the most part, the bugs don't hurt trees or people, but they do create other problems.

“When the adults emerge, they'll have that ruckus sound; that's the males making that call to attract females,” explains Dr. Evans.

In the past, the loud noise has led some Hanover County residents to call 911.

The insects are expected to stick around until the end of May or early June.
