RICHMOND, Va – The Mayo Bridge was closed overnight after a car crossed over the center lanes and drove off the side of the bridge into the canal.
One man made it out of the submerged vehicle. Police say initially he claimed to be a passenger in the car. Later dive teams searched the car and the canal and could not find anyone else. Eventually the man admitted he was the only person in the car, but denied being the driver.
He was taken to the hospital to be checked out. A tow truck had to be brought in to remove the car from the water. Police say that the driver is being charged with reckless driving.
