Chesterfield Teacher Arrested For Having Heroin At School

CHESTERFIELD, VA—A Swift Creek Elementary School teacher has been arrested after police found heroin in her possession on school grounds Monday.

Jessica L. Young, 35, of the 13000 block of Thornridge Lane in Midlothian, was arrested and charged with possession of controlled paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

Police say Young had heroin and drug paraphernalia in the school building; police also found drug paraphernalia in Young's vehicle.

Young is a special education teacher at Swift Creek Elementary School.

8News spoke with Macie Brady, a parent whose child was in Young's class just last year.

“We're all just devastated,” Brady said. “I mean, we're shocked.”

Brady is the mother of four children, all of whom have attended Swift Creek Elementary School, and say in all of that time, she's never seen something like this.

“We cannot believe that happened,” Brady said. “If she [Young] was someone I had to pick out, she isn't someone I would pick at all,” Brady said of Young's arrest.

Young was arrested after Police said they received an anonymous tip.

Police said they've closed their investigation of Young and said they don't believe any drug distribution occurred.

Chesterfield County Public Schools spokesman Shawn Smith released the following statement to 8News: “These are very serious charges and the employee was immediately removed from school property. The employee has not been working for the school division pending the disposition of the charges and the administrative process.”

Police say Young is set to appear in Chesterfield County District Court March 13 at 1:00 p.m.

The following letter was sent to parents by the school Thursday:

“January 17, 2013
Dear Parents,

As your child may already have shared with you, Mrs. Young continues to be out of the building on leave dealing with a personal matter.

As a long-time educator and as a parent, I understand the importance of stability in a child's classroom.  We are in the process of securing a qualified substitute for Mrs. Young.  It is our goal to find someone who can serve this classroom for the next several months if necessary.  Consistency in expectations and teaching style are important to student learning.

We continue to strive to meet our goal of providing high-quality instruction in a safe, supportive and nurturing learning environment.  Thank you for your understanding and support.  Please contact me via e-mail at or by phone at 739-6305 if you have questions or concerns.  We look forward to working in partnership with you to provide your child with every opportunity to experience success.

Thank you so much for your continued support of Swift Creek Elementary!

Peggy Innes”
