Virginia Tech Researchers Named VA’s Outstanding Scientists

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Two Virginia Tech researchers have been named as Virginia's Outstanding Scientists for 2013.
Harold E. Burkhart is being honored for his work in forest stand management. He is a university distinguished professor in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation.
Patricia M. Dove is a leading expert in biomineralization. That's the process by which animals grow skeletons and other functional structures.
Dove is the C.P. Miles professor of science in the Department of Geosciences and director of the Biogeochemistry of Earth Processes research group.
Cupron Inc. received the governor's Award for Science Innovation. The Richmond-based company's technology is used to create copper-based antimicrobial products such as counter tops.
Gov. Bob McDonnell and Richard Conti with the Science Museum of Virginia announced the awards Wednesday.
