At approximately 2:40 p.m. this afternoon, Virginia State Police responded to a two vehicle crash on Interstate 95 northbound north of Bells Road in the City of Richmond.
The crash occurred when the driver of a 1999 Toyota Solara, who was traveling in the left lane, hydroplaned and lost control of his vehicle. The Toyota crossed over into the right travel lane where it was struck by a 2011 Kenworth Tanker fuel truck.
After striking the Toyota, the tanker, which was carrying approximately 85,000 gallons of fuel, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck the guardrail. No fuel spilled from the tanker.
Both drivers were wearing their safety belts. The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries.
Currently, the left lane is open and the center and right lanes remain closed for cleanup. Once cleanup crews arrive, they will pump the fuel from the tanker into another tanker. There is no estimated time on how long clean up will take.
Patterson, 26, of Aliquippa, Pa was charged with reckless driving.
