NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) – Newport News police say an officer who was shot during a traffic stop has been treated at a hospital and released.
Media outlets report the shooting occurred around 7 p.m. Wednesday at an Interstate 664 off ramp in Newport News.
Newport News police spokesman Harold Eley says the officer and the suspect exchange gunfire and both suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The injured officer's name wasn't released. He is part of the department's organized crime unit and was in an unmarked vehicle.
Eley says the officer was treated for wounds to the face at Riverside Regional Medical Center.
