VCU Student Arrested For Starting Fires In Dorm

Richmond, VA—A student has been arrested and charged, for allegedly starting fires in trash cans on Virginia Commonwealth University's Campus Saturday.

In the early morning hours of November 17, police and fire crews responded to Rhoads Hall, after fires were intentionally set in two bathroom trash cans on the 12th and 18th floors.

Following a joint investigation by Virginia State Police, Virginia Commonwealth University Police Department and the City of Richmond Commonwealth's Attorney, 22-year-old Javier A. Chavez of Sterling, Virginia was arrested.

Chavez was charged with one felony count of burning in an occupied dwelling. He was held without bond until his arraignment, held Wednesday morning.

Chavez also faces disciplinary action by Virginia Commonwealth University following his arrest.

The students inside Rhoads Hall at the time of the fires were evacuated; there were no injuries.

The fires caused approximately $20,000 in damage to the dormitory.
