VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) – Voters in Virginia Beach have approved a nonbinding referendum on the expansion of a light-rail system.
The Virginian-Pilot reports about 62 percent of voters approved the referendum Tuesday.
It asked whether the Virginia Beach City Council should adopt an ordinance to support efforts toward expanding The Tide, which Hampton Roads Transit opened in Norfolk last year.
Supporters say extending the light-rail line would advance economic development, ease traffic congestion and offer a transportation alternative.
Opponents cite the project's proposed cost and say it wouldn't ease congestion.
