Richmond, Va – These two hand grenades may be children's toys, but when these popped up on the X-ray screen at the Richmond International Airport (RIC) checkpoint Wednesday morning, the TSA officer who was staffing the machine probably skipped a heart-beat.
TSA officers are trained to detect weapons and this well-trained officer saw what turned out to be realistic replicas on the X-ray monitor at the checkpoint and contacted the Capital Regional Airport Commission Police, who regularly patrol the airport.
The police responded and confiscated the grenades, which belonged to a woman who originally was ticketed to fly to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico with a stop in Atlanta at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). The woman missed her flight, but was permitted to rebook on a later flight. There was no impact to airport operations.
